Obituary for Sam Jenkins, Jr.

Sam Jenkins Jr. was born January 26, 1930 in Straven, Alabama to the late Alma and Sam Jenkins, Sr. While still a young child the family relocated to Dolomite, Alabama. Early in his life he confessed hope in Christ and joined the Bethel AME Zion Church, Dolomite. He attended Dolomite school and Westfield High School in the neighboring community of Westfield.

In his late teens he moved to Bronx, New York under the watchful eyes of sisters Seleda, Luxora and Rose. While there, he attended Morris High School. Some years later he returned to Dolomite and was employed by Woodard Iron Company, later acquired by Koppers Company. He would remain at Koppers until retirement after thirty years of dedicated service.

In 1963, Sam met and married his loving wife, Mary Ella. They moved to Shades Valley in Bessemer, Alabama. After moving to Shades Valley, he united with Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. He served faithfully as Trustee, Senior Usher, member of the Senior Ministry, and readily assisted as a server for the Food ministry. He also served as Treasurer of the Brothers & Sisters Christian Union. In the Shades Valley community, he was affectionally known as “Sweet Sam”.
