Susie Martin Obituary

Today, we celebrate the life of Susie Mae Martin, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister who was devoted toher family and friends. She was born Susie Mae McIntyre to the late Dan and Alberta McIntyre on December 22, 1942, in Margret, Alabama. Susie was the youngest and the only girl of five children. While she loved her brothers, she enjoyed the special treatment she received as the baby girl in the family. She told many stories from her childhood, including how she got her brothers in trouble and had reduced chores, but she also got into fights standing up for her brothers. After she graduated from Asheville Colored High School, she moved to Toledo, Ohio to attend college. While in college, one of her classmates introduced Susie to her brother, John Martin, who was home visiting from the miliary. Susie and John fell in love and were married in Toledo, Ohio on August 3, 1963. Susie and John had two kids, Jacquelyn "Jackie" and John Jr. With John in the military, the family traveled the United States together. They moved every two to three years, and when John was deployed, Susie took great care of her children all alone. She was the rock of the family. She worked many jobs, made clothes for the kids, and taught them how to advocate for themselves. Susie was proud of her secretarial degree and pushed her kids and grandkids to get their education. After John's retirement, Susie and John were inseparable. During their 55 years of marriage, they enjoyed traveling, bowling, attending church, and just spending time with their family.Susie loved her family. She was always there for her kids, grandkids, brothers, and in-laws. Susie and John's home was always open to family members. Quite a few lived with them over the years. The loving couple also hosted annual family Thanksgiving gatherings at their home for more than 30 years!Susie loved the Lord. He was first in her life. She was an active member of many churches when the family moved across the country, including her final home church of New Mountain Top in Winston, Georgia. She served as an usher there for many years and was an active member of the Les Soeurs Club.Susie was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Martin, Sr.; parents, Dan and Alberta McIntyre; three siblings, Daniel, Deloies, and Percy McIntyre; and two nephews, Theodore McIntyre and Roderick Forest McIntyre.A large loving family is left to cherish her memory, which includes: her brother, Albert McIntyre; her daughter, Jacquelyn Martin Hardrick; her son, John Martin, Jr. (Tammy); five loving grandchildren, Taryn, Sierra, Alexus, Jalyn, and Jo'van; two great-grandsons, Ja'ceon and Malik; one soon-to-be-born great-granddaughter; nine nieces and nephews, Tyrone McIntyre, Alonzo McIntyre, Daryl McIntyre (Janice), Cynthia (Dwayne) Headen, Kerry McIntyre, Frederick McIntyre, Teja McIntyre, Yolanda Bufford, and Khalena McIntyre; her three siblings-in-law who were more like brothers and sisters, Hubert (Regina), Carlean (Tony), and Beverly (Stan, recently deceased); and a host of nieces-in-law, nephews-in-law, other family, and friends whoremember her with loving care.
