Rev. Sims Obituary

Reverend Charlie Eugene Sims was born on August 12, 1927, in Praco, Alabama, to the late Andrew and Maude Harper Sims. He was raised and resided in Dolomite until he became a resident of the Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home in Pell City in June 2016. He departed this earthly realm on Friday, June 5, 2020, at St. Vincent's East Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama. Reverend Sims was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruby Mae Sims Barnes Vandergraff and Emily Pearl Sims Hicks; and his brothers, Robert David Sims, Fred Owen Sims, Willie Sims, and Samuel Houston Sims. A defender of his country, Reverend Sims served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. After completing tours of duty in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy, he worked for more than 38 years as an employee of United States Steel. Reverend Sims received his certificate of License to Preach in December 1973, and graduated, with honors, from Birmingham Baptist College and Beeson School of Theology at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. One of his most memorable sermons was "A Crap Game at the Foot of the Cross."God blessed His faithful servant leader to pastor two churches: Holly Grove Baptist Church in Jemison, Alabama, and First Baptist Gary-Ensley in Birmingham, Alabams, where he served for more than 32 years. He was also an active leader in The Fellowship of Churches. He was most proud of dedicating all of his grandchildren back to the Lord.Reverend Sims was fun-loving, had an awesome sense of humor, and would even pull a prank or two every now and then. He never met a stranger and loved to share, pulling together resources from near and far. While he was an avid and successful fisherman, Reverend Sims was definitely a Fisher of Men.Reverend Sims and his wife, Alma Sanders Sims, were a loving and devoted couple for more than 73 years. They have two daughters, Alease S. (Levi) Sims of Birmingham and Angela (Willie George) Sims Storey of Madison; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a very special niece, Veronica Jones Lathan; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. "Granddaddy... How are you doing?" "If I was doing any better, I couldn't stand myself!"
