Mrs. Nelle Yvonne Sumbry Ormond, a devoted wife, loving mother and Nana, tireless community
servant, and woman of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 4,
2025.
Nelle was born on September 11, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, the youngest of six children to
the late Sam and Nelle Goodwyn Sumbry. She was a proud graduate of G. W. Carver High School
and furthered her education at a technical school, equipping herself with the tools to serve others
with purpose and professionalism.
She was united in holy matrimony to John Henry Ormond, her partner of 58 years, on Easter
Sunday, March 26, 1967. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and commitment. They
raised their beloved son, Patrick Henry Ormond (Hope), of Birmingham, Alabama, and cherished
their grandchildren: Mckenzie Ja and Sumbre Jalyn Ormond, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; and
Patrick and Partrell Sanders, of Birmingham, Alabama.
A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, Nelle embodied service in every facet of her life. She
worked faithfully for South Central Bell for 25 years and was a proud member of the Communications
\Vorkers of America. She later shared her voice and talents at WJLD Radio Station, where her
presence left a lasting impact.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Nelle served her community with steadfast dedication. She
held the role of neighborhood treasurer and volunteered tirelessly with the Civil Rights Institute.
Her contributions earned her the Outstanding Volunteer Work Award from the Jefferson County
Department of Health. As a chief poll worker, she helped safeguard the democratic process with
diligence and grace.
Nelle’s life was a quiet testimony to strength, compassion, and purpose. Her legacy is etched into
the hearts of all who knew her from neighbors and church members to co-workers and lifelong
friends.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
