Gertha Nell Reed was born December 2, 1929, to Willie and Reva H. Williams in Bessemer, AL. She later moved with her parents to the community of Dixiana, AL, known as Bradford Mines. She attended Jefferson County Schools. She confessed Christ at an early age at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church, Dixiana, AL. She later married and moved away and travelled abroad with her now deceased husband. She returned to the States and joined St. James A.M.E. Zion, Birmingham, AL, where she sang in the choir and served in many other ministries of the church. She later joined 54th Street Church, Fairfield, AL, where she attended until herillness caused her to move with her daughter and occasionally would attend Bethel Baptist Church, Pratt City, with them. Nell worked at Estes South until her retirement. Her favorite verse of the Bible was the 23rd Psalm.Nell departed this life on April 5, 2021.She leaves to mourn one devoted daughter, Claudia Hale, whom she loved dearly, and son-in-law, Willie Hale, Jr., whom she called son and her "Buddy", of Birmingham, AL; granddaughters, Phoebe Davis and Dina Parker Brown (Rodney) of Birmingham, AL; grandsons, Michael Hale and Cornell Hale (Robyn) of Birmingham, AL; four greatgrands;eight nieces and nephews; a special niece, Rebecca (Beckie) Dennis Jackson of Detroit, MI; one sister-in-law, Sarah Vansant; a host of other cousins, relatives, and friends; and a special friend, Oscar Mae Clarke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and RevaWilliams, one sister, Ruth Williams and two brothers, Willie L. Jr. and Walter Carey.
