Derrit Scarver went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his beloved children, on April 27, 2020, at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, AL. Derrit was born August 10, 1936, in Barbour County, Alabama, to James Scarver and Estelle Castelow, both of whom are deceased. He attended A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham. Derrit joined the Army and served his country honorably. While in the Army, Derrit honed his passion for cooking. He later began his career in food services, working in various restaurants and even owning a restaurant, Sideline BBQ. His main career was as an assistant chef at the Birmingham and Vestavia Country Clubs. He retired from the Vestavia Country Club in August 1999. Upon retiring, he relocated to his family home in Clayton, AL. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He was an avid coon hunter throughout his life. He also enjoyed fishing and card games. Derrit was blessed with many gifts. His talents included building, mechanics, plumbing, electrical, real estate, and investments. His love for reading helped him to acquire knowledge in becoming an entrepreneur. He accepted Christ at a young age and attended St. John AME in Birmingham, AL. Derrit married Zola Casselberry Scarver, who preceded him in death, on December 18, 1985. The two were wed on May 27, 1962, in Birmingham, AL. They had seven children and instilled in them the importance of hard work and education. Two of the children preceded him in death, Derrit Jr. on July 17, 1977, and Rhonda on August 26, 2018. Derrit leaves to honor his life his five remaining children, Cathy Scarver, James Scarver (Christine), Cedric Scarver, Donald Scarver (Karen), and Terri Scarver Powe (William). Derrit was loved by many, including Gladys Scarver, who raised him as her own son after she wed his father, James Scarver.
