Clarence Sherrod, affectionately known as "Fat", was born on March 22, 1944. He was one of eight sons of the late Sam Sherrod and the late Johnnie Mae Strickland Sherrod.
Clarence confessed Christ as a young man. He was baptized, along with three of his brothers, at New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Herman Stone. Clarence was a 1963 graduate of A.H. Parker High School. Following in the footsteps of older brothers, Clarence served his country as a soldier in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a recipient of a Purple Heart.
After years in the Army, Clarence began his civilian life as a hardworking man. Holding down at times two full-time jobs, he worked for United States Steel Corporation for over 30 years before retiring.. During a very intense steel-workers union strike, Clarence picked up a job with the Birmingham Housing Authority. When the strike was over, he went back to work at the steel plant by night and continued working, by day, with the Housing Authority for 10 years before retiring from both companies.
He was preceded in death by six brothers: Robert, Sammy, Vergil, James, Frederick and Prentice, and two sisters: Louise and Pauline.
Clarence is survived by three daughters: Alisa Sherrod Bearden, Cheryl Sherrod, Erin Sherrod, and one son, Prentice Sherrod; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; surviving twin brother, Clayton "Butch" Sherrod and sister, Betty Sherrod Ross; a host of nieces, nephews, family, and best friend for life, Herman Whitehead.
