Deacon Charles Hicks was born September 22, 1939, in Docena, Alabama, to the lateBobo L. Hicks and Sophie Mae Matthews.He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Jean Cook and Dorothy and Johnny Rush.He gave his life to Christ and joined the Mt. Avery Baptist Church. He was chairman of the Deacon Board for many years, sang in the Mt. Avery Male Chorus, and served as a Sunday school teacher. He was most passionate about his role as an adult Sunday school teacher. He was sought after by many area churches as a guest Sunday school teacher.Charles graduated from Reuben Yancey High School and started college but then joined the U.S. Army Reserve. During his working career, he worked at Fontaine, held multiple part-time jobs, and retired from Lehigh Portland Cement Company, after 37 years, as a Supervisor. He took pride in having a strong work ethic, as well as being a loving family man.Charles loved and always wanted the best for the city of Margaret. He served on the city council for over 28 years and was Mayor Pro Tem for more than half of them. Charles was so passionate about Margaret that he was running for Mayor at the time of his death. He was united in holy matrimony to Bettie Jo Hitt on June 28, 1958. From this union were born eight children, two of whom preceded him in death, Dexter and Charles Hicks, Jr., along with his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Bettie Jo.His surviving children include Rita (Kirk) Hansen, Pamela White, Marcus Hicks, Penelope (Rickey) Butler, Conrad Hicks, and Sherrie Hicks, and a special son, Corey Hitt.He departed this life on September 1, 2020, at Grandview Medical Center. In addition to his children, he leaves the grandchildren and great-grandchildren to cherish his memories. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren are: Tiffany (Demarius) Perry, LaQuita Curtis,Miesha (Corey) Mason, Shannon Mickens, Chad (Tiffany) Mickens, Trenton (John) White, Amber (Quintez) Prowell, Tierany White, Amanda Hicks, Shala Mickens, Myles (Maya) Hicks, Matthew Hicks, Mason Anderson, and Rakia Butler; great-grandchildren: Rylan, Kori and Kannon Mason, Aidan Richardson, Anilah Prowell, Kennedi and Kamryn Hicks, Aubree Crump, Olivia Jo Mickens, and Jasmine Mickens; one daughter-in-law: Carla Hicks; two brothers: Larry (Barbara) Hicks and James (Rowena) Lee; two brothers-in-law: Don and Michael Pickett; and his aunt: Christine Porter. He had several life-long friends and acquaintances. He maintained close relationships with them. He remained in constant communication with Rev. Curtis Miller, with whom he started as a co-worker, and then became close friends with him, and later, his Bible study partner. In his later years a very close and loving relationship developed with his great-nephew, Justice Carter.Charles has many, many family members in Margaret, Anniston, Toledo, Detroit, New York, and other locations. He also cherished relationships made with his many friends and acquaintances, far too many to name. He loved and cared for them all.
