Obituaries
Peter Gilbert gave his life to Christ at an early age and became a member of First Baptist of Powderly under the leadership of Rev. Pitt. He was born to the union of Walter and Willie Gilbert of Birmingham, Alabama, on January 18, 1945. He was preceded in death by: his parents; three sisters: Rebecca Gilbert, Bessie Williams (Charlie), and Ariene Perryman; and four brothers: Jacob Gilbert, Jessie Gilbert (Ruby), Freddie Gilbert (Mary), and Walter Gilbert, Jr. (Delia).
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 53 years, Ann Gilbert; his dedicated son, Tony Gilbert (Sandra); two loyal grandsons: David Gilbert (Rashemmna) and Anthony Gilbert; two great-grandchildren: Dazire Gilbert and Monye Gilbert; one sister, Ella Wilson (John); one brother, Arthur Gilbert (Maxine); two devoted goddaughters: Vivian Miller-Baker and Johnnie Edwards; a very dear friend, Ruby Jennings; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Pete met the love of his life during his high school years, Ann Lawson, who later became his loving wife in June of 1966. He graduated from A.H. Parker High School in 1965 (The Thundering Herds). During Pete’s life journey, he achieved many accomplishments. Pete served on the Board of Directors of the Community Health Center in Indiana. He served as a Deacon for 33 years, Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School teacher, and Head Cook of the Culinary Ministry at New Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Indiana.
Pete was also an exemplary employee, retiring after 32 years from Inland Steel Mill. Additionally, he served on the Board of the Boys and Girls Community Center. After retirement, he relocated to Calera, Alabama, where he joined New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher under the leadership of Pastor Harry Jones and Pastor Mike Jones for 11 years. With his earthly assignment fulfilled, Pete transitioned Tuesday, September 24, 2019, to his heavenly reward and now rests in the arms of Jesus.
