Obituary for Kie Bates

On November 3, 1949, Kie Bates was born to proud parents Claude Bates, Sr., and Mary Ann Bates, who both preceded him in death.

Kie Bates confessed Christ at an early age. Later in life, he transitioned to the New Creation for which God called him to be. He was a faithful member and tither to Mt. Olive Baptist Church of West Blocton, now under the leadership and direction of Reverend Sammy Price.

Kie Bates was extremely proud of his accomplishments along with his educational, collegiate, and career experiences. He attended Mt. Olive Elementary School, George Washington Carver High School, and Bessemer State Technical College, formerly known as Lawson State Community College. Kie received several diplomas and certifications in electrical, all phases of welding and maintenance mechanics, plumbing I, II, and III, gas pipe fitting, lock smithing, carpentry, and cabinet making. He retired from Pullman Standard and Local Union 92, The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Union. He was the owner and proprietor of Bates Auto Sales. Kie enjoyed his antique cars, attending and riding in various car shows.

Kie had an enduring love for his daughters and grandchildren. He was very vocal about his love for all of his family and friends. He loved his community as well. Kie took food to many families throughout the holidays and over the years.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Dawson, grandson, Tavarus Johnson, Sr., and host of other loved ones.

Kie leaves behind: his cherished daughters, Shelia Lloyd and LaTonya (Reginald) Johnson of Bessemer, AL, and Kamonia (Willie) Morgan of Birmingham, AL; three brothers, Claude Bates, Sr., of Bessemer, AL, William (Angela) Bates of West Blocton, AL, and Claude Bates III of Bessemer, AL; three sisters, Ada Perry of Brighton, AL, Margaret Bates of Augusta, GA, and Mary Ann (Andrew) Stacy of West Blocton, AL; grandchildren, Tiffany, Jessica, and Britany Lloyd of Bessemer, AL; Temarcus Johnson of Bessemer, AL; Amicah Bates of Texas; great-grandchildren, DeAngela Jackson, Jesaiah, Kendall, and Kerry Lloyd of Bessemer, AL, Tavarus Johnson, Jr., Cordarroe Jr, Cordae, Cordarrian, and Caliyah King of Bessemer, AL; special friend, Marie Lockhart; and a host of other family and friends.
