Obituary for Jimmy McCrory Long

On August 15, 1951, the household and lives of Mrs. Mattie and Mr. Jim McCrory were forever changed. On this date, God gave them a great creation in the image of Himself and, in true form, it was a son they named Jimmy. Little did they know at that time that this sixth child would one day make their hearts rejoice.

Jimmy grew up to find favor in God, the community, school, and all the lives he encountered. God gave Jimmy many gifts and talents that he used to excel in academics and sports which enabled him to earn a scholarship to college while starring in basketball, football, and baseball. After two years of college, Jimmy decided that he wanted to do something else in life and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He remained enlisted for about three years before medical issues brought him home from being stationed in the Philippines to the V.A. Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. God watched over Jimmy and healed him enough to leave the V.A. He returned to live with his mother, Mrs. Mattie, until she herself became ill and had to go live with her youngest daughter, Gloria, who became her caretaker.

God gave Mrs. Mattie a few more good days and, on most of her good days, Gloria would take her mother to see Jimmy, who had moved into a V.A. appointed home in Tuscaloosa and later, to Fayette, AL. Those visits ended when Mrs. Mattie became bedridden and later perished at Gloria’s home in 1996. Before Jimmy himself perished on January 20, 2020, he lived to see the end of the earthly journeys of: his mom, Mrs. Mattie; his dad, Mr. Jim; brothers, Emmanuel and Joseph; and sister, Valtina. Because of his early years of serving God at Zion Springs, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, and Harmony Street Baptist Church, Jimmy he was given grace by God to finish his journey and lived to see all of this and more.

Jimmy now leaves the torch to be carried by: sister, Rosemary; brother, Johnny (Mary); baby sister, Gloria (Thomas); six nieces; five nephews; and an insurmountable number of cousins, family members, and friends. A great challenge it is, but with God’s help it will be carried proudly with dignity. Farewell Jimmy, and we will see you in heaven.
